I’m interested in health, fitness, mental health, bodies, food, and body image. I’m interested in how systems of power impact these things, from the micro to the macro level. I think and write through an intersectional feminist lens.
I am inspired by Sharon R. Guthrie’s feminist ethic of care, which states that:
Successful resistance…requires a reconstruction of female identity that involves not only changes in the intellectual component of female socialization, but also the development of a physically empowered female self.
I refer to this process as feminist ‘‘care of the self’’-a self-constitution of female identity that emphasizes the social construction of identity.
The title of the blog is derived from Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman. I chose it because it is unapologetically and aggressively feminine, because I feel grounded in that span between my hips, and because it makes me think of deadlifting–one of the most empowering things I’ve done.
I’m a queer white femme from Canada who likes bike rides, swimming in the ocean, and being in the forest when it’s raining.
